Alexandre Proia, Artistic Director

Alexandre Proia began his professional career with the Boston Ballet and was invited to join New York City Ballet under Peter Martins and Jerome Robbins in 1984.  He performed with NYB as a soloist and principal dancer.  He was featured in the Tony-nominated Broadway production of Chronicle of a Death Foretold in 1995, was a guest artist with the Martha Graham Dance Company in 1997, and worked with director/choreographer Martha Clarke for three years on various productions, including Vers La Flamme and Hans Christian Andersen, beginning in 1999. 

Born in France, Alexandre studied ballet with Michelle Miance in Mantes La Jolie before entering the School of Paris Opera Ballet. There he studied under the tutelage of such teachers as Claude Bessy, Max Bozzoni, Solange Golovine, Rene Bon, Gilbert Meyer, Molly Molloy, Joseph Roussillo and Michel Renauld.  After graduating in 1980, he was awarded a grant to study at the American Dance Festival at Duke University in Durham, NC.

Professionally, he has performed, taught and choreographed for numerous companies and schools across the globe including New York City Ballet, School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Stars of Paris Opera, the Paris Opera, Teatro Colon (Buenos Aires), Maggio Danza (Florence), Cape Town City Ballet (SA), Ballettakademien (Stockholm), the Juilliard School, the Ailey School, Steps on Broadway, the Lines Ballet School (San Francisco), the New Jersey Ballet, Bordeaux Opera Ballet and the Joffrey School in New York.
