open adult program

The Georgia Ballet School offers a wide variety of opportunities for adults who have always loved, admired, or wondered about studying dance. Adults gain joy, flexibility and strength through our Open Adult Classes. Designed to accommodate wide ranges of age and physical skill, classes in ballet and related dance styles are challenging and enjoyable. All are welcome, and the only requirement is the desire to dance.

For beginners, classes are a fun way to get fit while gaining experience. For more experienced dancers, classes are more advanced and challenging. Adults may choose from classes in beginning through advanced levels of ballet including pointe work. If you are unsure of which level you should attend, contact the school director for a consultation.

Open Adult Classes take place in the professional studios of The Georgia Ballet and are taught by experienced faculty members and performing artists in a fun, stress-free atmosphere. Full-term registration is not required for Open Adult Classes as they are offered on a drop-in basis. No placement class is required for the Open Division.

Class Offerings

  • Adult Beginning Ballet is structured to provide students with a firm foundation in ballet technique and vocabulary in a series of steps. Exercises include fundamental barre work as well as the introduction of basic turns and jumps. These are then combined in simple movement phrases. Students vary from first time ballet students to those returning to ballet after years away and are looking for a “refresher” course.

  • Adult Intermediate Ballet continues into more complicated barre and center exercises for those students who have a firm understanding of basic ballet concepts. Students practice a variety of turns, adagio, and small and large jumps, with emphasis on building proficiency, strength and speed. Ideal for students who may be more advanced but would like to work on the details of their technique.

  • Adult Advanced Ballet allows technically proficient students the ability to strengthen their skills in a complex and challenging class which emphasizes the complete range of classical ballet technique, taught at a professional level. Classes include adagio, complicated turns, grand allegro, and pointe work.

  • Adult Pointe/Ballet Repertoire, intended for students of at least intermediate level, combines a basic pointe class with the opportunity to explore choreography in the classical ballet repertoire. Students will learn selections from such famous classical ballets as The Sleeping Beauty and Paquita among others in this class geared to make every dancer a rising prima ballerina.

  • Adult Modern promotes individual expression and incorporates a broad concept of rhythm, interpretation, and full-body movement. Modern dance also provides a good foundation in physical awareness and balance. It consists of relatively natural movements allowing an excellent means of self-discipline and self-discovery.
